Tips For Taking Care Of Your Smile At Home

Our teeth require dedicated care and attention so they can stay bright and healthy. Following proper care guidelines will maintain healthy bacteria levels, keep plaque from developing, and support long-lasting teeth. You also improve your general health with these habits, reducing the risk of oral illness affecting other parts of the body. To better care for your teeth, here are some tips:

Introduce Positive Habits

Dentists recommend that people brush teeth twice and floss at least once per day. When brushing, angle the bristles to a 45-degree angle, using gentle circular motions, and do so for two minutes. The angle of brushing is important for the bristles need to reach beneath gums to eliminate plaque and food particles.

Flossing afterwards is key to cleaning between teeth, which is where many particles get stuck. You have a variety of options for flossing, from floss sticks, Gumchucks, and waxed floss Choose the method that best suits your comfort, and be sure to floss after brushing, or whenever you feel that food is stuck in teeth.

Take Charge of your Nutrition

Nutrition plays a key role in dental care. Changing up your nutrition to reduce sugar intake will significantly improve your oral and general health. Increasing the amounts of fruits and vegetables will support balanced oral health. Reduce the amount of desserts, sweet snacks, and sugary beverages, and you will not only see improvements in your overall health, but also in the brightness of your teeth.

For children, improving nutrition may be difficult. Reserve sugary foods for special occasions, and be sure to have them drink plenty of water. Juices and sports drinks are major contributors to cavities and do not offer health benefits that outweigh their negative effects. Additionally, snacks including pretzels, crackers, and chips contribute to cavity development. After snack time, be sure to have your child drink water to wash away extra food particles.
