Traditional Dentures Compared To Implant Supported Dentures

If you are missing most or all of your teeth, you’ve probably considered traditional dentures as a solution. It is likely that you are aware of some of the problems associated with these dental appliances, such as an unstable bite while enjoying your favorite foods, and embarrassing slippage while speaking. If these issues are of concern to you, there are alternatives to adhesive based dentures, including implant supported appliances like dental bridges and full arch dentures.

The Basics of Traditional Dentures

Adhesive-based dentures consist of several artificial teeth that are mounted on an acrylic base that resembles your gum tissue. This appliance is made from a custom impression of your gums and any existing healthy teeth. The acrylic base is designed to be fully customized and fit correctly over your gums for comfort and stability.
Traditional dentures rely on the fit of the prosthesis, suction, or dental adhesives to remain in place. Below we list pros and cons of traditional dentures:

Advantages

  • The procedure is non-invasive and does not require surgery.
  • Lowest cost for full arch replacement.
  • Typically covered by dental insurance.

Disadvantages

  • Instability of bite, slippage while eating and speaking
  • Traditional dentures allow further deterioration of the jawbone caused by tooth loss.
  • Traditional dentures may require denture realignment because of bone loss and changes in jaw alignment.

Implant Supported Dentures

Considered the new standard for tooth replacement, implant supported partial and full dentures are secured by two or more dental implants. A titanium post is surgically implanted into the jawbone by a trained dentist, periodontist, or oral surgeon. The post fuses with the bone and provide strong anchors for the denture which enables a strong, stable bite. Consider the pros and cons of implant-supported dentures:

Advantages

  • Stability of bite.
  • They provide a sense of confidence.
  • Durable and Permanent.
  • Dental implants also contribute to a healthy jaw bone, avoiding loss of bone density that leads to facial changes including sunken cheeks and a protruding chin.

Disadvantages

  • Minor oral surgery is required.
  • Insurance doesn’t always cover treatment.
