What's The Point Of A Root Canal?

Root canals are an important procedure for anyone with dental decay who wishes to keep their natural teeth. Not everyone has a positive outlook on this treatment, even though it can be accomplished with relative comfort and ease. If you’re experiencing sensitivity while eating hot or cold foods or have chronic toothaches, root canal therapy not only relieves the pain but restores bite function to the tooth.

Eliminating Inner Decay

Bacteria eat deep into a tooth’s structure, taking a normal cavity and expanding it into a larger oral health issue. Over time, the bacteria breach the inner portion of your tooth and infect the dental pulp, a collection of nerve endings and vital tissue that keeps teeth healthy. From here, infection can spread to the jaw bone. With a root canal, the dentist cleans out the tooth’s interior, removing infected tissue along with the pulp, leaving the area sterilized.

After filling the canal with biocompatible material, infection is sealed out and lasting structure is supported. If bone tissue has been affected by decay, then more extensive procedures may be required.

Restoring your Smile

The final step in root canal therapy is restorative care. A custom crown is made to fit over the treated tooth to return structure and provide long-lasting dental function. Made from porcelain, this restoration appears seamless in your smile and grants a natural aesthetic. Most of your natural tooth is preserved with root canal therapy, and supports a more beautiful appearance while giving the crown strength underneath it.

A Comfortable Procedure

Root canal therapy is nothing to fear. Prior to the procedure, your mouth is thoroughly numbed, and your dental team waits to begin until both you and your tooth are ready. Your dentist will ensure your comfort throughout your care, and explain each step along the way to give you peace of mind.
